Sharon MacDonald has documented old quilts throughout Nova Scotia
On March 12, textile history specialist Sharon MacDonald brought along her extensive slide show to talk to Mariners about old Nova Scotian quilts. Along with quilter Barb Robson, Sharon co-founded the Nova Scotia Heritage Quilt Project. Between 1995 and 2000, the project photographed and documented more than 1,100 pre-1970 quilts throughout the province. Many of the patterns Sharon came across will be familiar to quilters: basket, grandmother’s garden, sawtooth and Irish chain. Sharon has a strong interest in the social history of quilts and quiltmakers. A copy of her book, Old Nova Scotian Quilts (co-written with Scott Robson), is in the Mariners library. And as always, the meeting gave Mariners a chance to share their work with other quilters.
