The quilting year started off in a burst of colour with Tina telling us about her trip in October to the International Quilt Festival in Houston where her Jewelled Diamonds was chosen as the signature quilt for the whole festival. Tina shared with us her quilt journey since Christmas 2009 when she received a gift of a sewing machine, to her first quilt in March of 2010, to where she is now – travelling throughout North America with her beautiful creations.
She shared with us images of quilts from the various shows held in Houston as well as her experiences in the classroom with internationally famed teachers like Paula Nadelstern, David Taylor, Caryl Bryer Fallert, and Karen Stone.
Tina’s Jewelled Diamonds, inspired by Kaffe Fassett’s bordered diamonds pattern, was an award winner at the Mariners quilt show in 2012. It was accepted into the National Juried Show in 2013 in BC, the AQS show in Paducah and was chosen as the signature quilt for the International Quilt Festival in Houston. Tina won’t be seeing Jewelled Diamonds any time soon as it will be travelling as part of the In the American Tradition special exhibit until September of this year.
Her Mermaiden (which also appeared in the Mariners 2012 show) and King Neptune , shown together as a diptych quilt titled Deep Sea Fantasy, have been juried in the Road To California quilt show in Ontario, California.
Other Mariners showed what they’d been doing over the holidays. Those interested in the pattern for Jennifer’s baby quilts can find them on her blog. A Quarter Inch from the Edge. Jean displayed some bingo squares made for December’s potluck evening. She’s asking quilters to think of creative ways the squares can be pieced together for a quilt to donate to charity.
